Inflated in the void between pallet stacks, they stop the load from shifting at sea — where most impact damage is decided.
A container is never loaded to the exact centimetre. The gap left between the two rows of pallets is what lets the load move, and a ship at sea moves it constantly. A dunnage bag fills that longitudinal void and turns two loose stacks into one block.
The bag goes vertically in the channel that runs lengthways between the two rows, covering the full height of the gap, and is inflated through the quick valve. Bag level is chosen by the weight of the cargo, not by the size of the gap alone: against a container wall, heavy cargo needs timber — a level 1 bag will not hold it, and a level 2 or higher bag can damage the wall.
